Castelrotto lies on a sunny plateau at the foot of Alpe di Siusi with a wonderful panoramic view. It takes 15 minutes to drive to the Alpine meadow, the journey to Ortisei takes 20 minutes, Bressanone and Bolzano are about 30 minutes away, Merano is about 1 hour away. The bus connections are also ideal: buses leave for Bolzano every half-hour and every hour for Ortisei and Bressanone.

The town of Castelrotto owes its fame in particular to the Kastelruther Spatzen band. The Castelrotto municipal area extends from 720 m (San Vigilio di Marebbe) up to 2,000 m (Alpe di Siusi) and comprises the main town of Castelrotto as well as 11 surrounding hamlets. The name is derived from Castellum Ruptum, the former castle or palace, of which nothing remains, apart from a few traces in the Chapel of St. Antony at Kofel.
